Step-by-step newbie guide

I frequently hear how complicated this is and how many rules there are attached to it, neither of which are really true. Therefore, I've outlined here how to get involved in this game in five easy steps.

Step 1:
Figure out who you want to be. To check to see if that person is taken, go here. If the person is taken, you may want to go to our list of suggestions for who to play, located here.

Step 2:
Get a LiveJournal at www.livejournal.com. Set up the journal however you want it, preferrably with some icons. If you don't have icons, go here and someone will make you some.

Step 3:
Add people to your friends list and start commenting to them. If you want a list of people to choose from when building your friends list, go here. If you want to know more about the game or more advice, check out our completely unofficial "user manual".

Step 4:
You may want to get an AIM name because a lot of people roleplay on AOL Instant Messenger. To get one of those, go here, download AIM and when you go to sign on, you'll have the option of making a new screen name. You'll want a seperate AIM name for your character rather than the one you use for yourself. Go to the user info pages of the people on your friends list, checking for AIM screen names, and add whichever ones you see.

Step 5:
If you want to join some communities, which is not necessary, check out a list of them here. Some communities require you to be recced, some just let you join.

And now you're playing.
